Mental Health: Beginning with the Basics!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a month to raise awareness of those living with mental or behavioral health issues and to help reduce the stigma so many experience, although many working in the field of mental health may argue that 31 days is not nearly enough time to dedicate to the nation’s most prominent illnesses.
In fact, mental health is in the top 10 most common health conditions nationwide, behind cancer, heart disease and diabetes. According to data from a 2023 Survey on the State of Mental Health in America, 21% of adults are experiencing at least one mental illness. This is a number that’s grown during the past few years, largely due to the pandemic.
So, what are the signs? When should we ask for help? And how do we get past all these stigmas?
